Summer is almost here, and I’m so excited! Not only is the beautiful sunny weather just around the corner, so are my summer classes. I’m teaching a bunch of stuff this summer — erotica, genre, book-length and memoir. I consider myself to be a passionate, organized, inspirational teacher who works hard to help you discover your inherent talents and voice, strengthen your weak spots, and produce the kinds of written work that makes you proud to be a writer (and that will likely get you published, if that’s your goal).
I hope you’ll consider taking a class with me this summer. I’d love to see you there!
*Two-Day Craft Class: Creating amazing sex on the page Friday 5:30-8:30pm, Saturday 9am-4pm, July 2 & 3
Andy Warhol once said, “Sex is more exciting on the screen and between the pages than between the sheets.” And, yet, for so many writers of both fiction and non-fiction, sex is one of the hardest things to write well. Whether you want to produce hot and literary erotic short stories, add realistic and imaginative sex to your novel, or pen sizzling poems, this intensive Attic class promises to deliver. Using exercises, readings, discussions and critiques, we’ll explore written sexuality in all its forms and learn the elements of language, character, narrative and style that come together to create amazing sex on the page.
For students who have moved beyond the basics of writing their memoirs, & are ready to dig down deep for hard-core revision on their manuscript & get it ready for submission to publishers. Learn how to structure your memoir, how to turn the first 50 pages into a powerhouse read, & how to get your book ready for the marketplace. You’ll receive detailed feedback, critiques and publishing suggestions.
*Generating Genre: Writing Short Sci-Fi, Horror, Erotica, Romance and More
Sunday, July 11-September 12, 3:30-5:30 PM
Whether you want to make your readers shiver with fear, moan with desire or take a leap into the future, this class will teach you the basics of writing genre fiction, including horror, sci-fi, thrillers and fantasy. Learn how to generate solid ideas and turn those ideas into great stories by creating memorable characters, gripping plots and dynamic dialogue. Discover authors who are breaking the genre boundaries, try your hand at a number of genres, and receive feedback and direction on your work.
Taught at Annie Bloom’s Books in Multnomah Village. Email me at shanna [dot] germain [at] gmail [dot] com for additional information.* Book-Length Projects: Two Days of Feedback on Organizing & Structuring Your Book Wednesday & Thursday, 5:30-8pm, August 25-26
It’s easy to get lost in the process of completing a book-length work. This class will give you the time & attention you need to stay on track and work through the difficult section of your opus, whether it be fiction or memoir. You’ll send a simple summary of your book project, as well as a section of the writing, to the instructor ahead of time & she’ll dispense it to the other students via email. Provides an opportunity to get feedback on a substantial section of your larger work, while also learning techniques for organizing & structuring your book.
